Core Web Vitals for Business Websites: What to Fix First

LCP, INP and CLS explained without jargon, plus a practical order of fixes that improves real user experience and search visibility.

Core Web Vitals are Google’s measures of how a page feels to real visitors: how quickly the main content appears, how fast the page responds, and whether the layout jumps around. They influence search visibility, but more importantly they track the things that make people leave.

The three metrics in plain English

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures when the biggest visible element, usually a hero image or headline, finishes loading. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how quickly the page responds when someone taps, clicks or types. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures unexpected movement as the page loads. Aim for 0.1 or less.

These thresholds apply to the 75th percentile of real visits, so a fast laptop on office Wi-Fi is not a fair test. Check field data from real users in Search Console or your analytics.

What to fix first

1. The hero image

The most common LCP problem is an oversized, lazy-loaded hero image. Serve it in a modern format at the size it is displayed, do not lazy-load it, and let the browser know it is important.

2. Render-blocking resources

Large stylesheets, web fonts and scripts in the page head delay everything. Load only what each page needs, defer non-essential scripts and preconnect to font hosts.

3. Third-party scripts

Chat widgets, tag managers and tracking pixels are frequent causes of poor INP. Audit them, remove the ones nobody uses, and load the rest after the page is interactive.

4. Reserved space

Give images, embeds and ad slots explicit dimensions or an aspect ratio, and avoid inserting banners above existing content. This alone fixes most CLS issues.

Make it stick

  • Set a performance budget for page weight and scripts, and check it in your release process.
  • Monitor field data monthly; a single new plugin or marketing tag can undo months of work.
  • Test on a mid-range Android phone over a mobile connection, where most problems show.

Speed is a feature. Faster pages typically mean more pages per visit and fewer abandoned forms, which is worth more than any ranking signal.
